Barrio Escalante

Uncover secrets of daily life and folkloric legend in San Jose with this captivating evening tour. Connect with your guide at Morazán Park where we will learn post-colonial Costa Rican history. Your tour continues with a walk through San Jose’s historic streets to view architectural highlights in the glow of twilight. Stroll through Spain Park to view the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which boasts ties to Andrew Carnegie. You’ll also see the National Distillery and the striking metallic building at Morazán Park, constructed atop swamps in the 1800s. Finish your walk at a local artisan market inside the beautiful National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs. We’ll continue to charming Barrio Escalante, one of the oldest residential areas in San Jose. The "barrio" as locals call it, was first a coffee farm but by the 1950's became the favorite neighborhood for the economic and political elites of the time. Nowadays, Barrio Escalante has reinvented itself and is now home to many up and coming restaurants and at night is a favorite meeting spot for locals and visitors alike.

The evening will end with a contemporary traditional meal at a hip local restaurant that is very popular with locals and offers a sampler of traditional Costa Rican pub fare.

Between your tasty three-course meal, and wines that go down a treat, you’ll be ending the evening feeling every bit the San Jose local.

Great City Tour
CHERYL_R
, Sep 2021
We enjoyed our city experience with our tour guide Juan. He was very informative and gave us so much history information on San Jose and Costa Rica. He pointed out and explained many historical buildings, where historical buildings use to be, and statues. Our tour ended with a wonderful meal.

Gabo was great! Very knowledgeable and friendly, and even took the time out of his evening to escort another couple to an extra location after the end of the official tour.

A history buff's kind of tour

This is more of a historical walking tour than it is a traditional food tour. You will learn about impactful events and individuals contributing to the history and culture of San Jose via several mini-lectures around downtown. Multiple food stops are not part of this tour but rather a beverage at the beginning, an optional (not included beverage at the distillery), and finally a large 3 course meal at the end. Food is authentic and really tasty if you can hold out 3.5 hours. Our host Gabriel was very kind, informative, and very passionate about the history of San Jose. He left us lots of recommendations and taught many useful phrases in Spanish. I hope you are lucky enough to have him as your guide!

So glad I did this tour!

Gabriel was super informative, friendly, and accommodating. I felt like I was spending the evening with a local friend showing me around town, more than a tour guide. If you want an authentic view of a part of the city with someone who is passionate about history and culture, he’s your guy!

Waste of time

I hate giving bad reviews however, we were at the meeting point on time. No guide was there. We even called several times with no response. We sat at el social bar (meeting spot) & ate a snack to wait for an hour & still no show. Afterwards requested a refund since this was not our fault & was denied. Don’t waste your money on this one.

What a fun tour…Gabo was amazing and knowledgeable. We learned lots of fun things about the city with a few surprises along the way. Dinner was FANTASTIC as well. Gabo also went the extra mile to make sure we all had our transportation set afterwords. Thanks for everything!

Hip San Jose night out
Sarah_B

My friend and I had no expectations but our guide Eric was the best! He even waited for us when we arrived late (😬). We got to see so many beautiful buildings/architecture, hidden food spots, a really cute part of town.. and went to the most hip, chic, restaurant that was so fitting for my friend and I’s style and personality.. felt like the tour was really catered to us. Also, it was basically a private tour because of COVID and I felt safe. Wore masks and the restaurant was so spacious and also covid safe. Highly recommend for a great night in San Jose!

Interesting tour, nice guide, but the restaurant wasn't the most COVID safe

Pros - Tour guide was very sweet and engaging! She shared a lot of interesting information about major landmarks and shops in the market - The dinner was delicious - Guide made sure everyone got home safely, helping with Ubers, cabs, etc. Cons - Similar to other reviews, the waiter at dinner tried to only provide 2 glasses of wine and had to be asked for the 3rd; the pours were not generous - The restaurant wasn't as COVID safe as I would have liked. We sat at an 8 person table, indoors with a small window open for air flow.

Erick's knowledge and experience were excellent. The market tour, the streets, the people, history, etc. The restaurant and dinner were gourmet: a much more significant experience than we were expecting and memorable.
