Meet your guide in a central local amid the colonial majesty of Merida, then travel by public transport to one of the city's oldest local markets. Absorb the bustling atmosphere and brightly colored stalls as you navigate this vibrant place, listening to your guide explain the purposes and origins of the exotic fruits and vegetables you see. Become acquainted with unfamiliar ingredients as you navigate the lively labyrinth of stalls.

Assisted by your bilingual guide, chat with vendors as you select prime seasonal ingredients to prepare during your cooking class. Awaken your senses to the animated colors, enticing aromas and energetic chatter of the market, taking a moment to appreciate a place rarely visited by tourists.

Guided by your host, you’ll prepare a Mexican meal as you learn of Mayan traditions and useful Spanish phrases. Learn about the Yucatan region’s distinct culture as your guide explains how Yucatan cuisine and customs differ from the rest of Mexico.

As sublime smells fill the kitchen, sample your Mexican dishes while you chat with your group, guide, and host around the dining table. Upon conclusion of the tour, your guide will arrange a taxi to return you to central Merida (own expense).

Merida Tourism Office
Polish up your cooking skills on this Merida tour that takes you from market to table… literally! We’ll kick off your delicious Mexican food experience by taking you to the oldest local market, always filled with locals – tourists hardly ever set foot here, giving you an authentic local experience right from the get-go. Your local guide will explain to you the kind of fruits and vegetables only produced in this region, such as achiote, pepita de calabaza, and chile habanero. You will enjoy a real market experience as we shop for the meal we’re going to prepare, at the stands of very friendly local vendors who will allow us to try some habanero sauces, Yucatan spices, and local spirits. Watch how the locals around you buy food for their own cooking, and learn all about Mexican market customs and culture. Yucatan cuisine is one of the most varied in Mexico, and the next part of your Merida food tour will give you the chance to cook it and eat it in the best way: as a family! While we prepare our food, your host and guide will explain some of the traditions of the locals, the influence of other cultures on the food of the Yucatan, and the differences between the Yucatecos and people from other parts of Mexico. Learn some Spanish and Mayan words while the food is being prepared and while you taste the delicious plates of yumminess as they are served. We’ll try dishes like salbutes, panuchos, lima soup, gorditas de chaya, and sip on horchata or hibiscus flower tea. With a belly full of delicious, authentic food and drink, we'll say goodbye to new friends and end this mouth-watering Merida experience.

Great Experience!!
, Mar 2020
The class was one of the highlights of out trip! Edgar was a wonderful guide and expertly took us through the market and cooking experience. My whole family (8 of us) loved it!
Great experience
, Feb 2020
Our guide, Edgar, was very knowledgeable about the food and cooking of Yucatan food. We enjoyed going to an average person’s home to do the cooking as hE talked about about the preparation. Loved it.
Authentic Charm + YUM

This is an amazing, very authentic tour. You’ll walk to the bustling market for shopping where locals shop. It’s fascinating but hot and crowded, and it’s not beautified for tourist sensibilities, so if that concerns u in the least u should skip it. But if that seems interesting to u then u will find it as fascinating as our group of 6 from Oregon, Maine and Utah found it to b! You’ll take the bus to a modest home kitchen for hands in cooking. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and our guide who kept the 5+ hours lively telling us about, food, culture and history. Our guide Gustavo is awesome!
Merida market and private home cooking tour
, Feb 2020
We required a change in our booking of our tour, and the Merida crew supported us in that change without issue. We travelled with our guide (Gustavo) through the streets of Merida and into the market to learn and purchase our meal ingredients. Our guide spoke amazing english and shared vast amounts of history and culture in connection with food as well as many other topics. He was always concerned for the happiness and safety of his group. We traveled by bus to his Aunt and Grandmothers home where we together prepared several dishes and ate within their home. Inclusions and non-inclusions were clear in the class guide. Pick up was clear and public. This experience surpassed our expectations.
Cooking experience at a private Mexican family house.

Best tour I have done so far in South America. Very authentic and inspiring guide called Gustavo who showed us around and how Meridian people really live.
A perfect day!

What a wonderful experience! Edgar, our guide, was so well organized and incredibly knowledgeable (history, politics, local cuisine, cultural traditions). It was very enriching and at the same time truly enjoyable and relaxed. He answered all our questions, we sampled food at the market and chatted with the vendors. At the home of our host, Rosario, we prepared several dishes with Edgar and Rosario’s help and directions, all with great enthusiasm. Finally we ate the product of our work and even took leftovers with us. A perfect day. Thank you Edgar and Rosario for your hospitality.

Great trip with Edgar, a great guide. The market was fascinating and the cooking class in a normal Meridian home was fun and delicious!
A nice cultural experience.

Had a really nice day visiting the market and making delicious food. This is a great tour to learn the basics of Yucatan cuisine. If you are a very experience cook, the tour is pretty basic, however it is still a fun day as you get to experience Merida life.
Edgar- the great guide

The entire experience of shopping in the local market is a truly authentic. We then went to Edgar’s aunts place to cook and it was just lovely - for someone who loves to cook this was a personal and enriching experience. Edgar is a great guide with knowledge about the ingredients and culture and lovely anecdotes. Thank you !
Cooking class was fabuloso!

Loved buying and sampling food in the market. We prepared our meal in the Merida home of Rosario, and then sat down to a delicious lunch. Edgar was a great tour guide and cooking instructor. Got recipes via email the same day. A really authentic experience.
