Check-in: 7.15am - Your guide will be holding a WALKABOUT sign, right by the taxi stand at Santa Maria Novella train station across from the outside McDonald's

7:30 AM
This activity will end right where it started.
Your journey from Florence to the Cinque Terre starts by coach, where you can relax as your guide shares stories about the area. You'll hear tales about the Tuscan city of Lucca and its famous resident Puccini, before learning about the Cinque Terre and its five fishing villages—Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso and Riomaggiore—that form the national park.

After a short, two-hour drive, you'll begin your hike through the Cinque Terre on the hills above Manarola. With your guide to help lead you, you'll follow a scenic trail to Corniglia, which culminates in a steep climb of some 382 steps. Note: This charming region is natural and untouched, so there are no hand rails or safety rails, and paths often cut close to the cliff's edge. (if you choose the tour option without hiking, the train will be used instead to move between villages).

Once in Corniglia, you'll enjoy some free time where you can relax and refuel with these spectacular views, before continuing your journey with a hike to Vernazza, where you'll pass terraces of olive groves and colorful bars and cafes. Take a dip in the bay before heading to Monterosso by train, where you'll have free time to explore the beaches, wine shops and artisan goods famous to the village.

The final portion of your journey will include a boat ride (or train ride, depending on weather) to Riomaggiore, a village known for its candy-colored houses, as well as a final hike back to Manarola. Your day trip from Florence to the Cinque Terre ends with a coach ride back to the city.

Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Borgo Storico di Corniglia
The middle town of the five, Corniglia is the smallest town and sits at 90 metres above sea level. The name derives from the huge spur of rock on which the village sits. Population of about only 200. San Pietro church from the fourteenth century on the site of an eleventh century chapel. San Pietro's day is 29th June and as part of the celebrations, there is a procession through the streets. A special savoury tart is prepared with rice, eggs and cheese and is shared among the people who take part in the procession.

Cinque Terre Trails
These ancient trails are rough but manageable. Be prepared for the hiking – although the path is open to everyone, remember that the ground can be slippery, uneven, and in places steep and narrow. The charm of the area is that it is natural and unspoiled, do not expect hand rails or safety rails when steps are steep or when the path is close to the cliff edge. Because of the nature of the hike, we are unable to accept small children or anyone with walking difficulties.

Stop At:
Vernazza
Vernazza is unique in the Cinque Terre because of the small port that was built allowing ships to land in the protected bay. It was already a fortified village and efficient maritime base in the earliest records available from the eleventh century. Today there are traces of the military defences built by the Genovese in the thirteenth century such as traces of the old walls, ramparts and the look out tower.

Borgo Antico
There was a castle here before 1200 and some ruins of it can still be seen. The community of Monterosso was founded in 1214. The church of San Giovanni Battista, built-in 1220 has a bell tower built in 1400 as a lookout tower. The church of San Antonio di Mesco was built in 1335.

Spiaggia di Fegina
The new town is called Fegina and is linked to the old part of Monterosso by a pedestrian tunnel. Statue of Neptune built into the rock, but made of concrete so badly deteriorated, was built by an architect in the 1920's. The sandy shelf provides the ideal habitat for seagrass which acts as a lung for the waters of the Cinque Terre and provides a beautiful beach for us. The whole area is a marine protected area, like the sea version of a national park. 2007 Forbes magazine called Monterosso the sexiest beach in the world....whatever that may mean.

Borgo Storico di Riomaggiore
At Riomaggiore, centuries ago, the distinctive tall, colourful houses known as Genovese tower houses arranged in rows connected by alleys, arches and steps provided a defense against pirates. House colours are regulated by the comune. You can't just paint them any colour you like! Houses have two entrances, one at the front and one at the rear on the higher road, so that when they were attacked by pirates, the people could escape. At the end of the eighteen hundreds the railway came along the coast and Riomaggiore, along with the other towns of the cinque terrre came out of their historic isolation, even though a road wouldn't reach them until the 1970's. Language, lingua ligure, the villages were so cut off even from each other that they spoke different dialects of the same language.

This tour was by far the most enjoyable that I’ve had while in Italy. It was a busy busy day but at no point did I find myself not having fun - even during the hike! Our guides Guido and Marco were incredibly knowledgeable and shared history of the area as the day went by. They were also personable, very kind and made us laugh with their jokes! If you are looking for a Cinque Terre tour, look no further! This was the most organized and most beautiful experience! Lastly bring water, a bathing suit if it’s summer, and your best hiking shoes…trust me you’ll need them!

Our guides Ado and Marco kept us on time throughout all the cities but still gave us enough time to explore on our own if we wanted. We really enjoyed the whole experience, and we can’t say enough about Ado, who was truly amazing! His wealth of knowledge really made us appreciate all the cities we visited! Be warned, this tour is long, and can be physically demanding.

Seriously: the best day of our entire trip to Italy! Beautiful postcard-perfect views everywhere you turned. The optional hiking part of the day was well worth the effort. The views from the trail were magical.

What an incredible experience! Yes this is a long day but is the best way to see all 5 villages without planning a single thing on your own. Gabriel our tour guide was not only knowledgeable but funny and engaging, kept the group together and the tour moving in a timely manner without being overbearing. He had great recommendations for every village and was all around awesome. I was very happy with him. The tour itself: you meet at 7:15am and get home around 9pm. We took the train in between each village (about 5 min ride each time) and a beautiful boat ride at the end to Riamaggiore. We had enough time in each village to look around and relax (in fact I would have preferred a bit less time in Monterroso and Vernazza as the day dragged a little toward the end. The hike between Corniglia and Vernazza was very fun, if you like hiking. The terrain is uneven and rocky so good shoes are a must, but not that difficult of a hike and the reward of the view of Vernazza from the top is well worth it. I did about 25k steps including the hike so lots of walking but at least you won’t feel guilty having an extra gelato or pizza :) A couple of small negatives: the lunch wasn’t worth 15 EUR in my opinion. Small portions and at this point I was starving so ended up getting more food later in Monterosso. Next time I would stay with the group but order a la carte at the same restaurant. We also get to Manarola first, which is the typical Cinque Terre view you see in all the photos. Unfortunately because you get there early the sun is on the wrong side of the cliff and photos are all washed out. I was a bit upset about this as I wanted the get the perfect photo. It would be better to do this village later in the day so the sun isn’t backlighting all the photos. Other than that, absolutely recommend this tour!!

The beach @ montorossi & vernazza were beautiful, we skipped the hike & enjoyed food @ vernazza & the beach @ both places. Our guide ADO was fun enthusiastic & friendly he made the trip all the more pleasant. Just make sure to sit on the left side of the boat on the way back for the best views. The walk back to the bus was a trek after an exhausting day make sure to have some energy left to walk back

Kiara was a fantastic guide. This is a trip you should definitely do if you are in Florence. Kiara ensures that you have enough choice around the activities so you could have the best time. The hike is worth it if you choose to.

Be prepared to walk a lot! It was a great tour and Alessandro was fantastic. He did a great job of keeping everyone together despite the massive crowds. He even helped arrange a separate lunch for us to accommodate our allergies. I can’t wait to go back again in September or October when it’s less busy and a little cooler.

This trip was awesome. And our tour guide, Chiara, was the key to this incredible day. She was super amiable, outgoing, and helpful throughout the whole tour! I really enjoyed her stories about the history for each towns and really appreciated her recommendations for food/places to visit for both the towns in Cinque Terre as well as in Florence! The food, views, hiking, beaches, etc. were all fantastic. If I could change one thing, it would only be that we could have arrived earlier / left later as I could not get enough of what this tour of Cinque Terre had to offer!

Wonderful day trip

We left for this trip around 7 and did not get back to Florence around 10. It was a long day but one of the best days. We drove about 2 hours to get to the Cinque Terre, we took trains in between each of the five towns which were very quick, and were able to take a boat ride at the end to see all the towns from the water. Each town is beautiful with all the different color buildings. The hike was very hot as we went in mid July. The first half of the hike was uphill, we got the best lemon slushy at the top and the next half was downhill to the next town. There were amazing views in between, would recommend doing the hike if you are able. This place is a must see if you are in the area.

Great trip but….

We had a great day in Cinque Terre. Our guide Ado was very energetic and kept us moving and on track. Unfortunately, I left my cell phone in one of the bars at the end of our trip. While I understand that it was my mistake, Ado did advise that he would contact the establishment and see if they found the phone. I had hoped that he or that someone from Walkabout Tours would get back to me to advise whether or not they had any luck on locating my phone. This to me was very disappointing.

Absolutely amazing, the time allocated for exploration of each town was just nice for me (since they aren't particularly large). Great mood set by the tour guides and Chiara was amazing. Very friendly, lively and helpful guide who provided many good food/ activity suggestions and local recommendations for even other cities. Enjoyed the trip throughly and found it very well planned, highly recommended

An amazing tour with an amazing company! Highly recommend this tour with Walkabout tours. Francesca, Chiara and Aldo took amazing care of us, ensuring the day ran like clockwork. Ensure you listen very closely to instructions and follow them and your day will be amazing and unforgettable. Probably our favourite day in Itay. Don't forget your swimsuit! Great value as well, at this price. The lunch option is surprisingly good, efficient, with a great view and can be booked while you are on the bus that morning.

We had an incredible day exploring the 5 villages of Cinque Terre. They were so unique and beautiful! The tour guides Chris and Guido were amazing - so informative and helpful. We enjoyed the delicious lunch provided ( additional charge) by the tour and we took the hike between 2 of the villages. It was hot and a lot of stairs but the views and lemon slushy (1/2 way through the hike) was worth it! We wished we had brought our bathing suits to take a quick dip in the ocean. We were able to take the boat ride which was nice as well. If you are interested in a taste of these adorable towns, this tour is a must!!

I had a great time with our tour guides Emma and Ado! They had amazing energy and answers to all our ‘many’ questions. Ado was my group guide and he made sure everyone was included and having fun. He was also incredible enough to help me retrieve my phone after forgetting it in cinque terre! Ado and Emma definitely made our experience to cinque terre so much more memorable and I would highly recommend going on trips with them!
