A startling blue pool nestled beneath the peaks of the Cerro Verde, Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes and fringed by sloping sugar and coffee plantations, Lake Coatepeque is among El Salvador’s most enchanting natural attractions, located on the cusp of the Cerro Verde National Park. At almost 6 km in length, this is the country’s largest lake, formed in the crater of an ancient volcano more than 50,000 years ago and nurturing a colorful population of catfish, guapote and zebra fish.

A tranquil holiday destination for both locals and travelers, the most popular activities at Lake Coatepeque are swimming and water sports, with sailing, kayaking, waterskiing and scuba diving all possible. Additional highlights include the hot springs dotted around the water’s edge and the island of Teopan, once an important place of Mayan worship.

Ilamatepec Santa Ana Volcano Early Hike + Jetski in Lake Coatepeque!

star-5

Private Tour. We start this hike early, we believe this hike is much better early in the morning. The views are better in the morning, more chances of seeing wildlife, the weather is much nicer and THERE IS LESS PEOPLE. Volcan Santa Ana is the highest volcano in El Salvador. Its an active volcano with a crater of 3kms of circumference and 400mts deep. Get ready for 4 hours (medium pace roundtrip) of  beautiful trails in the evergreen forest mixed with volcanic rock and pyroclastic material closer to the summit. The active crater  plus the view of the other volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean, probably the best view in the whole country. Enjoy different temperatures and be prepared for cold winds, lots of sun or rain depending the season. After the hike, we drive to Lake Coatepeque where you will have a 30 minute ride on your own jetski!

Santa Ana volcano hike with privileged early access. Go safe and skip the crowds

Santa Ana volcano hike with privileged early access. Go safe and skip the crowds

star-5

Skip the crowds and lines with privileged early access. This is a private early departure, not the 11 AM joint hike. As licensed guide I'm granted with privileged access, way ahead of the daily joint departure. This way you go on your own pace, making the experience more enjoyable. You know, the larger the group the slower it goes (and the noisier it is). Even weather tends to be more favorable on early hours. This walk goes from the cloud forest on the skirts to the volcanic wasteland at the crater. From the top you can see the steamy sulfuric acid lake at the bottom and the multicolored layers of ash on the rim as well Coatepeque caldera lake below. Skip the large groups, the warmest hours, the lines and the slow walkers. With me you can spend as much time you want by the crater. No hurries, no crowds. Enjoy the views, take pictures, Time's yours! You mark the pace. Trail partially shady. There's restrooms by the park ranger's station. Suitable for kids. Total distance: 5.5 Mi
