The Basics

A visit toPorto Cathedral (Sé Catedral do Porto)is essential to understand the history of Porto, one of Europe’s oldest populated centers. The church dates back to the 12th century and work continued into the 16th century (not counting later baroque and 20th-century additions), accounting for the varied architectural influences. Travelers can take a half-day river cruise tour stopping at the cathedral and many other main city monuments. A tuk tuk tour of Porto is another way to avoid uphill walks.

Private Electric Tuk Tuk Sightseeing Tour of Historic Porto
Deanna was an excellent driver. She provided us with a great overview of Old Porto, stopping at beautiful view points. She shared her knowledge and was very pleasant to be with…would recommend Deanna! One suggestion would be for the company to install a simple blue tooth speaker for the guests that are in the back of the tuk tuk.

We had a good time following Teresa around Porto and listening to the history of a city she grew up in. In addition, she was kind enough to provide her recommendation for her (and now ours) favorite places.

Essential Porto Walking Tour
This is a great way to get an overview of this beautiful city, I did the tour early in my stay and found it was very helpful in figuring out how to spend the rest of my time in Porto. The guide was terrific and had lots of interesting stories about Porto and tips for enjoying the city and how to get around. I highly recommend this tour.

Porto Hop-On Hop-Off Tour with Optional River Cruise and Wine Tasting
Don't get the idea you can "hop-on-hop-off" so easily--we waited over an hour for the bus at one stop. We booked online and didn't notice we could download a brochure/map so were confused about how to find the stops, but we should attribute that to our own stupidity. Otherwise the tour, boat ride and porto cellar tour and tasting were great!

Nice tour going through the city and learning about the history of Porto's Jewish community. Anna did a good job explaining the sites we visited and their connection to the Jewish people.

Where to Find the Best Panoramic Views of Porto

Situated at the highest point of the city, the cathedral is famous for its stunning views and is a must for photographers. For the best vistas of the city, head to the terraces on the north and west sides of the church to capture panoramic scenes of Porto’s ancient labyrinthine streets and the red-roofed dwellings below.
