Takerkoust Lake (Lac Lalla Takerkoust) Tours

Takerkoust Lake (Lac Lalla Takerkoust)
With its deep-blue waters set against a backdrop of sweeping desert plains fronting the Atlas Mountains, Takerkoust Lake (Lac Lalla Takerkoust) is a world away from the heat and bustling atmosphere of Marrakech. The French made the lake in the 1920s to provide the city with water and electricity; today it’s a recreational area popular with both locals and visitors.

The Basics
Swimming is not permitted at Takerkoust Lake, but water sports such as jet-skiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking are big activities here. The beautiful landscape around the lake is perfect for exploring on foot, bicycle, all-terrain vehicle, horseback, or camel. Many travelers pack a picnic lunch to enjoy near the water’s edge.

You can discover Takerkoust Lake independently, on a day tour from Marrakech, or as part of a more extensive tour that may include the main attractions of Marrakesh plus the neighboring Ourika Valley and High Atlas Mountains to visit the Setti Fatma waterfalls, the Kik Plateau, and a traditional Berber home for mint tea. Many tours include round-trip hotel transport, entrance fees, food, and drink; check specific tours for details.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Takerkoust Lake is ideal for outdoors lovers, families with children, and anyone looking for a tranquil escape from the city.
  • For walking and sporting activities, bring appropriate clothing, shoes, and gear.
  • Many tours to the lake and beyond are accessible to wheelchair users. Inquire before booking.

How to Get There
Takerkoust Lake lies within the Agafay Desert, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Marrakech. Expect about a 1-hour drive down the Route d’Amizmiz; on-site parking is plentiful. You can also access the lake via shared or private taxi, which are readily available in the city. Bus 45 runs from the Marrakech medina to the lake in just over an hour.

When to Get There
The lake offers a nice respite from the city year-round. In the spring (mid-March through May), the surrounding mountains are abloom with colorful wheat and wildflowers. Come in the morning to avoid the crowds, especially on weekends, when city dwellers come in droves, notably in the hot summer months.

Agafay Desert
If you don’t have time to venture to the Sahara Desert while visiting Marrakech, you can still have a serene desert experience just outside the city. The Agafay Desert may lack the cinematic golden sand dunes of its storied cousin, but the landscape within the High Atlas Mountains is stunning and close enough to Marrakech for a day trip or an overnight. Many Agafay outings comprise romantic dinners, camel rides, and glamping.
