Atlas Mountains

Marrakech, Morocco

The Basics

The vast mountain range is split into three main regions: the centrally located High Atlas, the Middle Atlas to the north, and the remote Anti Atlas, tucked away in the south. Easily reached from Marrakech, the High Atlas range draws many visitors, with hotels clustered around popular spots like the picturesque Ourika Valley, Ouirgane, and Imlil. It’s also home to the 13,671-foot (4,167-meter) Mount Toubkal, Morocco’s highest peak. For many, a stay in the High Atlas Mountains is a pit stop en route to Ouarzazate, the launch pad for camping tours and desert camel treks. Experience the grandeur of the Atlas Mountains on a day trip from Marrakech, which might include activities such as quad biking, hot air ballooning, or a visit to a Berber village.

Desert Agafay & Atlas Mountains & Waterfalls, Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
The whole day was very well planned and we thoroughly enjoyed it! We started off with a camel ride through the desert which was really fun and then progressed through to the Atlas mountains where we had a nice lunch. After lunch, we walked over to a pretty waterfall. We then got back onto the minibus and went to an Argan Oil Women's Cooperative which was really interesting to learn about. Overall, it was an amazing experience! Hassan and Ibrahim were wonderful tour guides.

Desert Agafay and Atlas Mountains & Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
We had such an amazing day trip with Ibrahim! We loved the walk in the Atlas Mountains was so beautiful with amazing views of the mountains, river and waterfalls. The lunch at Ibrahim’s house was amazing with more food than we could eat, including delicious tagine, couscous, salad and fruit for desert, all served on a beautiful roof terrace with views of the mountains. I would definitely recommend

3 Day Trek in the Atlas Mountains and Berber Villages from Marrakech
Walking the Atlas Mountains is a remarkable experience. The people are kind and generous, and the landscape is breathtaking. Our guide took great care of us, and throughout the journey he was able to modify our route to accommodate our different comfort levels (60 year old father with 22 year old daughter). It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Desert Agafay & Atlas Mountains & Waterfalls, Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
I booked the tour very late the evening before, and we had no issues communicating with the tour guide via WhatsApp about the pick up time and location. The minibus was modern and clean and our guide was really enthusiastic (and a great photographer!). All the stops were well planned, and there was enough time to rest between each activity, but not too much to get bored. The lunch was very tasty too. Definitely worth taking the tour - 5 stars from us!

Desert Agafay & Atlas Mountains & Waterfalls, Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
Couldn’t recommend this excursion enough. My friends and I had the best time ever. The driver that picked us up Aziz was sooo nice and welcoming. The camel ride instructor Mohammad was incredibly nice and reassuring (especially for those of us who were a bit scared). The hike/walk was fun and informative. The guide Rasheed was highly knowledgeable and funny making it a positive and exciting experience. Would definitely do again.

Atlas Mountains Hot Air Balloon Ride from Marrakech with Berber Breakfast and Desert Camel Experience
Fantastic experience, would highly recommend this. We chose the early morning session, to get the sun rise view. And it was WORTH IT!! The views from the hot air balloon at sun rise were very surreal! This was accompanied with breakfast which was also very authentic too. We also did the Camel ride which was also an enjoyable experience, however was on the short side. But it was enough to get the experience of it.

Atlas mountains & three valleys, waterfalls, full day guided tour from Marrakech
An amazing day out with Mustapha and our group! A great tour, giving us a great insight to what the Berber life is like! We rode camels, drove to the Berber markets, Mustapha's family made us lunch, which was absolutely delicious. Hiked up the mountains and then to see the waterfalls with treats across the trip!! I would highly recommend!!!! 10/10 tour!

Atlas Mountains Hot Air Balloon Ride from Marrakech with Berber Breakfast and Desert Camel Experience
Overall the experience was great. A “once-in-a-lifetime” must do. The camel ride was short and we were tethered together. The car ride to/from pickup to activities was fine but we were stuck in the back the entire time. The guide could have suggested a rotation or offer a vehicle with more leg room in the third row. Thank you

When to Get There

For most travelers, the best time for a trip into the Atlas Mountains is March through November. While summers can be hot, temperatures in the Atlas Mountains are cooler than in the Moroccan lowlands. Mountain snow is usual from mid-January to mid-February, making this an excellent time for skiing in North Africa. Note that some businesses will be closed during Ramadan.

Highlights of the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are dotted with interesting places to explore. Azzaden Valley is a quieter alternative to neighboring Imlil Valley and a popular base for guided treks. Dades Gorge, famous for growing Damascus roses, is a favorite destination for climbers, hikers, and white-water rafters. The rivers of the Middle Atlas feed the beautiful Ouzoud Falls, while Ifrane, the gateway town of the region, looks right out of the French Alps.
