The trail runs along the Ponta de S. Lourenço, the easternmost peninsula on the island of Madeira, named after the caravel of João Gonçalves Zarco, one of the three discoverers of the island of Madeira. This peninsula is of volcanic origin, in its majority basaltic, being also existent formations of calcareous sediments. In its follow-up we have two islets: the islet of Barley, the Half or the Desembarcadouros, the islet of Ponta de S. Lourenço, the Farol or Fora. The peninsula is classified as a partial natural reserve and the islet of the Desembarcadouro full nature reserve. The entire terrestrial area and the marine area adjacent to the North coast, up to the depth of 50 m, are part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance - Natura 2000 Network.

This trail begins in the Machico valley in the southeast part of the island and consists of a flat course of about 6.5 km, with an easy degree of difficulty. Also known as the Vale das Mimosas, you can admire magnificent views of the Machico Valley (where Portuguese navigators landed for the first time) and the Desertas Islands. Along this trail you can observe agricultural fields, where vegetables and fruit are grown by the local population and enjoy some of the exotic flowers along the way.

The cenario we will find is the arid part of Madeira, Ocean is turquoise and there is a magic contrast with the ochre of the mountains. Zarco, the discoverer of Madeira, baptized this place with the name of his ship, São Lourenço. It's a unique place. Our Journey begins at 8:30am with the pick up,and I'll take care of the transportation. At the end of the day we can stop at "mercearia", the place where locals go to have a drink at the end of the day. Departure from the hotel at 9:00 am towards the parish of Camacha to observe the wicker factory and all its process. Afterwards, climb to Pico do Areeiro at 1818m, where you can observe the beautiful mountains and surrounding valleys and even the parish of Curral das nuntas, deep in one of the great valleys. Descent to Ribeiro Frio, where there is a nursery of trout that later are dropped in the brook. A visit to the center of Santana is followed to observe the typical triangular houses with thatched roof, followed by another stop in Faial. Returning to Funchal, you will have two more stops, at the belvedere of Ponta de São Lourenço and Machico. Return to the hotel by 5:00 p.m.
