The Basics

The Alhambra is broken up into sections: the Generalife Gardens (a collection of courtyards, pools, and fountains); the Alcazaba (the remainders of a Moorish fortress); and the Nasrid Palace (the main palace complex). If visiting on your own, choose from four official ticket types that include access to various areas at different times. Or, opt for a guided tour or private tour to remove some guesswork and gain insights from a local tour guide. No matter how you visit, book early, as the number of daily visitors is limited and tours and tickets sell out fast.

Beautiful site, great tour.
Our guide Antonio was excellent and brought a balanced perspective on the Islamic and Christian eras. Also managed the group well.

Alhambra Complete: Ticket Skip-the-Line Nasrid Palace and Generalife with Guide
Very Clean place, looking really genuine. Not to many people (space enough for everyone) and staff very professional, respectful and educated. Explanations are clear, massage was excellent. The Hanmam wasn't warm enough, I believe, due to repeated entries and exits of people.

Great tour - shame about the lack of Covid controls

Alhambra and Generalife Small Group Guided Tour with Skip the Line Tickets
The tour guide was very good and knowledgeable but, unfortunately the Covid measures at the facility were insufficient - people all crowding together in close quarters with no attempt at any kind of crowd control or social distancing. My health was worth more than this, so I left early.

Skip The Line Alhambra and Generalife Guided Tour
This tour was the perfect addition to our trip in Granada! Our guide, Virginia, was so knowledgeable and personable. Her passion and knowledge of the history of Granada and Alhambra made this tour memorable! If you have the chance to do this tour, do it! If you can, go in the morning hours if it is summertime so you aren't caught in the heat.

Exclusive Private Tour Alhambra in Granada
We spent the afternoon with our guide, Ruth. She was a fantastic person and did an amazing job. She was very knowledgeable about the Al Hambra, but what really made the afternoon memorable was Ruth’s bubbly outgoing personality. I would certainly recommend her to anyone looking for a guide. She made our afternoon.

Alhambra skip-the-line tour: Nasrid Palaces, Alcazaba and Generalife
The guide YuanKho was brilliant. A local who has studied history and does not believe in having a standard narration. Made it lively and engrossing. My only issue was the starting point mix up! Book the 3 hour thing so that the palaces get included. And walk it down from there through a steep path (not part of the tour). Worth travelling to Granada to experience this.

Skip the Line: Alhambra and Generalife Gardens Half-Day Tour
Wonderful tour. Guillermo was an outstanding guide. Very knowledgeable and engaging. The tour was nearly 3 hours, but it was wonderful. The meeting place was a little hard to find. And bring your passport!

Alhambra and Generalife Premium Guided Tour
The 3 sites are a must. The guide, Ana, was outstanding and charming. She provided all the necessary information but did not overwhelm. Thankfully she shared a “secret” tip on from where to view the Alhambra across from the Albazin area mirador…a less crowded place. It was a well spent 4 hour tour at one of the marvels of Europe and the world.

Skip the Line: Alhambra and Generalife Gardens Half-Day Tour
Phenomenal tour with more history and stories than one can readily absorb. Beautiful and complex architecture and gardens that tell much about the cultures that inhabited the Alhambra.

Private 3-hour Tour to Alhambra & Nasrid Palace Tickets included
Jacqueline was amazing; Extremely knowledgeable and very passionate. We were concerned about spending too much time stopping to talk and anxious to see everything. However, by the end Jackie spent all the time we needed to see everything. We learned all about the history and architecture and Jackie actually spent extra time to make sure we got the best experience.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Alhambra is incredibly popular, so be prepared to wait in line, even to pick up pre-booked tickets. Choosing a tour with skip-the-line entry will help maximize your time.

  • Visitors with disabilities should visit the Entrance Pavilion for information about accessibility. Wheelchairs are available.

  • The complex has four restrooms: in the Entrance Pavilion (near the ticket office), the Pavilion of Services, the Low Gardens, and the Sultana's Court.

How to Get to the Alhambra

Some visitors walk up to the Alhambra on one of the scenic routes from the city center. These paths are on a bit of an incline, but many believe the views are worth the slight workout. Those who would rather rest their legs can take a bus or taxi, or drive up independently (note that parking spaces are limited). Most guided Alhambra tours include round-trip transport from downtown Granada or from nearby cities such as Seville and Malaga.

When to Get There

The Alhambra is open year round, with varied hours based on the season and day of the week. Much of your visit will be outside, so dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. If you're visiting during the summer months, try to go at the earliest or latest available time slots to avoid the biggest crowds.

How to Choose Between a Night Visit and Day Visit to the Alhambra

The Alhambra is beautiful at all hours, so this is a matter of preference. Day tours are most common, but on a night tour, you get the unique experience of seeing the incredible site lit up against the dark sky. Visitors should note, however, that night tickets are separated between Nasrid Palace only or gardens only and cannot be combined. If you want to see both, choose a morning tour or afternoon tour.
