Essaouira Day trip from Marrakech

Essaouira Day trip from Marrakech

Essaouira is a charming old coastal city. To reach it, we cross the beautiful scenery of the R207 road to the coast. On the way, we will stop to see the argan trees where the goats climb on the low branches and feed, it is a fascinating spectacle and an absolute must when it comes to be photographed. Along the way, we will stop at a women's cooperative where they produce argan oil. Our trip to Essaouira arrives in the resort and the port city where you will see the vast expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean. Old brass cannons line and the ramparts protect the waterfront against ancient invasions. There are several modern restaurants in the port city and this updated culture combines very well with the history of the city. You'll feel like you're drifting in a time machine as you move from a modern cafe to a dilapidated house in the medina a few feet away. Essaouira is a popular stopover point for most tourists visiting Morocco and you will see just why when you visit it.

Berber Cooking Class at a Farm in the Countryside & shopping at a rural Souk.

Berber Cooking Class at a Farm in the Countryside & shopping at a rural Souk.

The cooking class is offered in the beautiful Haha-region 35 km south of Essaouira. This is the land of the Berbers, Morocco’s indigenous population. The Berbers of the Haha hills cultivate crops and keep animals, mainly goats and sheep. We visit a local souk featuring freshly harvested fruit and vegetables, in addition to meat, eggs, honey – in short, all the staples for daily living, including the essential ingredients for our Berber cooking class. The class takes place at an ecological farm, centred around an authentic Berber kitchen stocked with traditional items for food preparation. Khadija and Khadija, two lovely local women, show you how they roast barley grains on the fire, and then grind them in a stone mill to produce the flour and semolina used as the basis for traditional flat bread and couscous. We bake flat bread in a clay oven and steam couscous in a traditional clay pot. We learn to make a traditional tagine of vegetables and goat meat with Moroccan spices and olive oil – oil derived from the olive trees growing on the farm. Depending on the weather, lunch is served outside if at all possible. Eating in beautiful, calm and natural surroundings is a special event. Following the meal, we enjoy tea infused with fresh herbs from the garden. As we will be driving through the Argan zone, you have the option to visit an Argan oil cooperative and learn about the production of this beautiful oil - in all the world, a product unique to this area. They will offer us a taste of the lovely things they make with it, too. Very likely you will see the famous goats in the trees on this tour to the south of Essaouira.

Berber Market in Ida Ogourd & Visit of an Argan cooperative.

Berber Market in Ida Ogourd & Visit of an Argan cooperative.

star-5
5
Rural markets usually take place once a week. On Wednesdays in the village of Ida Ogourd locals do their weekly shopping and meet ‘n’ greet friends. This market is a friendly, family affair which takes place on a small hill in a fertile area only 20km southeast of Essaouira. Market-goers traditionally travel by donkey to get the goods they need for the forthcoming week: the “Donkey Parking Lot” surrounding the market is a sight to behold! At the market you find vegetables, fruits, spices, housewares, tools, and construction materials as well as various services that are offered: a blacksmith putting new horseshoes onto donkeys’ hooves; a welder repairing pans, kettles, and teapots; a cobbler resoling shoes. Of special note are barbers under tents - amusing barber shops, indeed! As we stroll through the market we pick up interesting details about farmers’ lives in this region accompanied by background information on Berber culture in the Haha province. We finish our tour of the market with tea as we observe the busy scenery. Afterwards we visit an Argan cooperative to learn about the production of precious Argan Oil - in all of the world this is a product unique to this area. We watch the Berber women at every step in extracting oil from the kernels of the Argan fruits using a delicate, traditional process done by hand. Of course, we taste this delicious oil that bears the name “Morocco’s Gold”.
