Gandia
The Basics
One of the major cities on the Spanish coast, Gandia offers both beachy splendor and culture aplenty. The city’s waterfront stretches include the popular Playa Norte, the calmer Playa de l’Ahuir, and the petite but pretty Playa de Venecia; the vibrant harbor area is also a hot spot. Beyond the warm-weather attractions, sightseeing highlights range from the Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba to the Ducal Palace of Gandia (once home to the local branch of the Borgia family).
Gandia is located within convenient day-trip distance of Valencia and Alicante.
Things to Know Before You Go
Gandia hosts several major festivals each year, including the International Classical Music Festival and the Cortoons Film Festival.
When in Gandia, be sure to samplefideuà, a paella-like dish made with noodles instead of rice.
Nearby Parpalló Cave is a Paleolithic site. Check out the many related objects displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Gandia.
Dating to the 14th century, the Collegiate Basilica of Santa Maria of Gandia (known locally as La Seu) is the city’s most important church.
How to Get There
The Gandia train station connects the city with nearby hubs like Valencia; most journeys take under an hour. You can also get there by bus from Madrid and other cities. Alternatively, Gandia is roughly an hour-long trip from Valencia by car—take the AP-7.

When to Get There
Gandia’s beaches fill up with crowds of sunseekers in summer. If you’re after warm weather but fewer people, go in late spring or early autumn. To experience traditional Gandia, visit during Las Fallas. Held each March, the festival is celebrated in cities across the region, and consists of street processions, firecracker shows, and the burning of traditional dolls (known asninots).
The Balearic Islands
If you’re looking for an island escape—or a big party—head to one of the Balearic Islands, an archipelago dominated by Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. Direct ferries run several times weekly between Gandia and Ibiza.
